{"id":1168,"date":"2017-01-03T19:39:24","date_gmt":"2017-01-03T10:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cotant.org.au\/?page_id=1168"},"modified":"2025-02-04T14:38:12","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T05:08:12","slug":"mssp","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.cotant.org.au\/what-we-do\/mssp\/","title":{"rendered":"MSSP"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Multicultural social support program (MSSP)<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2>MSSP aim<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The aim of the Multicultural Social Support Program (MSSP) run by COTA NT is to assist seniors within Territory migrant and ethnic communities to stay in touch, keep connected with the wider community, and engage with new people in regular events and activities that promote cultural and linguistic diversity in the Northern Territory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the assistance of MSSP funding provided by the Multicultural Affairs Office of the Northern Territory government, COTA NT sponsors two seniors groups \u2013 Italians and Timorese\/Portuguese-Chinese \u2013 who are brought together weekly for social and community engagement purposes. A casual support person coordinates the activities, undertakes translation services where necessary, and assists COTA NT to deliver the program to these two groups of very senior and isolated men and women.<\/p>\n<p>These groups help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prevent social isolation (which is known to be a factor in undermining mental and physical health), promote good health, and provide knowledge that will assist seniors to make informed choices.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain cultural identity within a social environment. Provide \u201cin language\u201d information for older people on a range of topics (e.g., aged care support in the home, healthy ageing, dementia, depression and anxiety, changes to Commonwealth\/NT programs for seniors, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Maintain seniors\u2019 confidence in going out by providing escorted\/hosted activities in safe, comfortable environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The programs are managed by COTA NT from Spillett House, but seniors attend a variety of venues and activities, including the Italian Club, Spillett House, Botanical Gardens, Nightcliff Swimming Pool, fish feeding, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Parliament House, and others.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"COTA NT: Multicultural Social Support Program (MSSP) Italian Seniors Group\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X0X5YSTm35c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Inclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Members of the groups are invited to all COTA sponsored events and other community events of interest beyond the scheduled dates for the MSSP program.<\/p>\n<h2>Advocacy<\/h2>\n<p>The Minister\u2019s Advisory Council for Senior Territorians (MAC-ST) was established in 2015 to provide a voice for the Territory\u2019s seniors\u2019 community.
